We discuss some properties of the sample average as an estimator of the population average. An example is given to illustrate that, despite having many desirable theoretical properties, it may give very inaccurate estimations sometimes. The accuracy of the estimator is discussed for the particular case of estimating a population proportion. Some points, related to sampling methods in general, are highlighted.
